August 2004 -- Oh!! What An August

With light winds our offshore fishing was fantastic with limits of solid snapper and kings with many dolphin thrown in as a bonus.

The highlight of the month was filming a T.V. show with Keith Warren and his crew. As the seas were somewhat confused we were not able to get the kings up on top as usual but we did get a great show highlighting our snapper and other offshore species. Look for the show to air late this fall. My hat is off to his cameraman as he continued to stand and film in CHOPPY WAVES that caused the rest of us to hold on between fish.

Our bay fishing continues to hold up to the pressure and we continue to put our guests on solid trout and outstanding redfish. Our guests this month have caught and released a number of larger trout. The best fish were a 29", 28 1/2'", and numbers of 27". I must add the 28 ½ " after being in the freezer for a week weighted in at 7#7oz. The fish had we weighted it the day it was caught would have weighted in excess of 8 pounds. The real story behind this fish was the angler who caught it is 16 years old. The red fish continue to blast top waters and soft plastics. Many reds in excess of 28" have been caught and released. This has been an outstanding year for reds.

As far as patterns our trout continue to start the day inside the outside edge of the grass about 100 yards. After the sun heats the water and the boat traffic starts these fish move closer to the outer edge. Trout will be holding along the edges of the grass beds with the reds in the potholes and along the bottom of the sand guts. Bone chartreuse and fire-tiger have been the most consistent colored soft plastics. Small bone top waters and chartreuse have been equally good. Top waters will produce larger fish but the action will be somewhat slower. The fish will continue to hold along the outer edges until the first cool fronts this fall. We are catching fish both north and south of the Port. I personally fish south during the week then when our weekend crowds arrive switch and fish north.
