May 29, 2005 -- The Good, The Bad, The Ugly!!!!!!!!!

The past week has again been very interesting! The first of the week we had a good consistent bite on trout and reds. Then here comes the weekend and boom! CHANGE!!! In defense of the weekend, we expected a slower than normal bite due to the Holiday and Willacy County Young Farmers Tournament traffic. Scooter and his group do a great job with the W.C.Y.F. Tournament. The proceeds go to college scholarships for kids in the Valley.

The first of the week we managed fair trout and reds for most guests. The trout were in 3 to 4 foot of water in sand potholes in the grass. Reds continue to hold in 1 to 2 feet along the sand and grass edges. Our water has dropped and look for the reds to move out in a little deeper water. Get ready for our HOT top water bite to kick off for reds in the shallows. Spitting Images, small super spook jrs. and small skittle walks will be the bait of choice. Blue/chartreuse, bone/chartreuse and orange have been our best colors for the reds. Glow/chartreuse soft plastics and red shad have been the best colors for trout. Look for the trout to move out to outside ridges with our water reaching the 80 degree mark. Remember with calm clear nights the shallows will cool and they will move into cooler water to feed in the early hours, then restage later in the morning a little deeper.

We hosted John Tindle and his group this weekend; he was the winner of our guest service survey. They managed to boat a few fish despite the traffic and 30 MPH winds during their visit. The high point of their trip was Kessler’s 24” plus trout. Picture on our photo section. I give these guys credit they fished hard in some tough conditions. One important note: Capt. Dan Coley set the all time fly rod record for sheepshead this past week. (Over 6 pounds) The sad thing is his client may have bested his mark but without a scale or Boga Grip we’ll never know. I can assure you Capt. Dan would prefer to see his client get the record in lieu of him. Those that know Capt. Dan, he guides for the love of the sport, not record books.

Our offshore has also taken off with good snapper and a few kings. Look for the king fish bite on top waters to explode the next few weeks. More to follow! Our Capt.
