And Here We Go Again... -- January 14, 2009

Between working Boat and Tackle Shows we are getting on the water every day we can. 2009 is starting out a continuation of the great fishing enjoyed 2008. Our Capt’s. On the water the last two weeks have found good trout and excellent red fish just about any place they stop. My last three trips have resulted in easy limits on trout for those wishing to take some fine eating home. Reds have been just about every where as well. My last trip Sunday and Monday were no different, with average sized trout being 18 to 23 inches. Don’t you just love knowing our fishery has turned around as quickly as it has!

Sunday was a day I almost called due to the cold front blowing in but my guests said lets go anyway. We sat around and drank coffee until 1:00 PM to let the wind die some. Leaving the dock at one we still had a 20 MPH plus COLD north wind blowing. After a 40 minute run north we started our first drift. I must say I was somewhat concerned it would be tuff, but was I wrong. Our first drift we had 3 mid slot reds and 4, 17 to 20 inch trout. We ended the day with plenty of fish caught and released to satisfy them. We did not land any real big mommas but one of the youngsters did land a 28 just sly of 7#.

Monday the wind laid down for us some what and we returned north to start over where we left off Sunday. Plenty of trout and GOOD reds were caught. The fish had moved into a slight depression just off the ICW. This water was about 6” deeper than the surrounding flat. It only took a 6” depth change to stack the fish up, kind of like the OLD SAYING: Shooting ducks in a barrel. Line up to drift along this line and the fish were there in large numbers. Both trout and reds were along this depth change. If you get nothing from this report PLEASE note, it only took a 6” change to stack the fish up. Don’t over look those small depth changes.

We caught our fish on Lindy glow, and electric chicken shrimp, as well as Yum Money minnow in bone. We also caught them on a NEW new- penny 2 ½ “gulp I am currently testing. My guests were using a rattling cork with an 18” leader. My last three trips I have been fishing drifters, yes we have managed to catch a number of trout 25 to 28” but I can’t wait till I get back Sunday as I have waders and can really work those big momma areas I can’t work drifting.
