Mitch epitomizes a popular Texas bump sticker; He may not have been born in Texas but he got here a soon as he could.  Mitch was born in DeQuincy, Louisiana but moved to Bay City in 1956.  He grew up salt curing himself in East and West Matagorda Bays from Sergeant to Port O’Connor.  Growing up, Mitch did betray old Davey Jones a few times and chased crappie in fresh water from Colleto Creek to Toledo Bend; however, the briny allure of the Texas gulf proved too much and he left the freshwater circuit to complete his piscatorial pickling.

Many of you may recognize Mitch as a veteran of the Getaway Adventures Lodge grill.  Mitch is living proof that if you hang around the lodge family too often you actually become part of the madness.  He started fishing at the lodge in 1998 and we don’t think he ever left.  He just seemed to hang around.  One day in 2007 while grilling some steaks and drinking a Tecate, Mitch made the announcement, “I passed the Masters Coast Guards Captains license yesterday.”

Mitch will retire from Conoco Phillips soon.  Hey, who wouldn’t after twenty-nine years?  Once he retires, Mitch will move from the lodge’s part time guide ranks to that of a full time guide and part time grill chef.  When asked what she thought about the new set-up, Momma Getaway grumbled, “Good riddance, super-charge the Wal-Mart card.  I am outta here to do some shopping.”

Mitch brings his deep love for the outdoors and fishing to the lodge.  Mitch has spent more than fifty years in the brine and behind a reel.  We are proud he is bringing his sense of cheer and good humor to the team.  Add his outgoing personality, grill skills, and ability to put his clients on fish in any kind of weather or conditions and, Mitch makes one heck of an addition to the team.  Just don’t ask him to go out past the jetties.
